Bupa

In an era where digital transformation dictates the pace of the healthcare sector, organisations face a critical decision: continue relying on external tech consultancies or invest heavily in building internal capabilities. For Bupa, an international healthcare leader serving 38 million customers worldwide, the choice became clear when its evolving digital demands required a more sustainable, cost-effective, and long-term approach to technical talent.

To support its ambitious technological roadmap – which includes leveraging AI, machine learning, cloud engineering, and advanced surgical robotics – Bupa partnered with Sparta Global to reclaim its intellectual property (IP) and establish an adaptable, in-house technical workforce.

Prior to reshaping its digital acquisition strategy, Bupa relied on an external development consultancy to spearhead critical aspects of its digital expansion. While this partnership provided specialised support, the consultancy maintained full ownership of Bupa’s core digital systems. This dynamic proved to be a double-edged sword; it was neither financially sustainable in the long run nor did it allow Bupa to cultivate its own technical capabilities.

The Solution

Sparta Global stood out as a leading capability partner, providing integrated, multi-skilled Scrum teams custom-trained to match Bupa’s specific architecture, which utilises frameworks like Azure, C#, .NET, and Apigee.

The engagement kicked off with an initial deployment of multi-disciplinary Spartans – spanning Scrum Masters, Business Analysts, DevOps engineers, and developers specialising in PHP, Java, C#, and API development. This momentum quickly surged, with more Spartan consultants swiftly integrated into the Bupa team. Crucially, the model featured a clear path to longevity: every consultant was scheduled to transition into a permanent Bupa employee after an 18-month deployment.

The Outcome

Sparta Global has now supplied agile consultant capability across all seven functions of Bupa Global. Equipped with additional industry credentials like PSM1 and AWS/Azure cloud certifications, these professionals seamlessly pivot between complex projects, driving rapid technical delivery and in-house upskilling.

Their impact was especially evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, where Spartans anchored Bupa’s rapid digital response, earning multiple internal awards for their contribution.

To date, more than 50 Spartans have successfully transitioned into permanent Bupa employees. By reclaiming its IP and building a continuous pipeline of diverse, technical talent, Bupa has successfully future-proofed its engineering success.
