Shell partners with Sparta Global to build an agile, scalable workforce solution across emerging business and technology capability

The global energy sector is undergoing a massive, historic transformation. As a leading energy provider supplying over 20% of the UK’s gas, Shell UK is at the forefront of this shift, committing to a net-zero emissions target by 2050. Achieving this ambition requires a delicate balance: reshaping the company to deliver lower-carbon products for the future while continuing to securely supply the oil and gas society relies on today.

At the heart of this strategy is a digital-first approach. To innovate new products and expand accessibility, Shell needed to build immediate, high-quality talent pipelines. Historically, the company had relied heavily on offshore and nearshore contractors to plug technical skills gaps. However, to secure long-term success, Shell wanted to move away from temporary fixes and cultivate its own future technology leaders – professionals who could inject fresh perspectives and drive innovation from within.

To turn this vision into reality, Shell partnered with Sparta Global to design a strategic workforce initiative.

Flexible Deployments and Structured Support

Sparta Global provided Shell with an agile, scalable solution, deploying emerging business and technology professionals – known as “Spartans” – across multiple teams and sub-organisations. These consultants brought in-demand expertise across core disciplines, including Business Analysis, Project Management, Data, and Software Engineering.

What set this partnership apart was its commercial flexibility and robust support framework. Deployments were precisely tailored to Shell’s shifting project demands, ranging from small, specialist technical groups to larger, dedicated corporate programmes.

To ensure long-term retention and smooth project delivery, Sparta Global wrapped every deployment in comprehensive professional and pastoral care. This focus on consultant well-being resulted in an impressive 4.1/5 average “Spartan happiness” score, which directly translated into excellent performance on-site and accelerated the progression of consultants into permanent roles.

Realising Leadership Potential and Diversity

The partnership has delivered exceptional, tangible value, establishing Sparta Global as a trusted, primary talent partner for Shell’s digital initiatives. A standout example of this pipeline in action is former Spartan Katy Harper. After joining Shell permanently in 2024, Katy rapidly progressed from onboarding an innovative learning tool for SAP to supporting asset management and finance design authority spaces. Reflecting on her journey, she noted:

“Sparta Global presented me with the opportunity and skills to work with a global business”.

Beyond closing critical technical skills gaps, the collaboration has been a powerful catalyst for Shell’s diversity and inclusion milestones. Breaking traditional industry boundaries, 44% of the deployed Spartans identified as women – a figure nearly 25% higher than the national average for women working in the technology sector.

By combining technical excellence with an absolute commitment to equity, Shell and Sparta Global have built a sustainable, diverse foundation for the digital workforce of tomorrow.
