Harry Elliott-Allen: Spartan Stories – driving DevOps innovation through automation

Like many Spartans, Harry entered the Sparta AI & Tech Institute looking for the right route into the tech industry. While he had a strong technical foundation from university, DevOps was an area he had not previously explored.

That changed when he joined Sparta Global.

“Sparta provided me with an exciting opportunity to expand my knowledge and learn more about DevOps,” says Harry. “It was a section of the industry I was unfamiliar with previously, but have found that I’ve really come to enjoy.”

Discovering a passion for DevOps

Having a strong technical background is valuable, but applying that knowledge in a business environment is a different challenge altogether.

For Harry, one of the biggest learning curves was understanding the breadth of tools and technologies within DevOps, and how they work together to deliver meaningful solutions.

Fortunately, Sparta’s hands-on approach helped bridge that gap through practical examples, regular knowledge checks and support from experienced trainers.

“The frequent knowledge checks allowed me to highlight areas I was struggling with and the trainers were great at helping me through the sections I found particularly difficult.”

Learning to innovate in an AI-first world

As AI continues to reshape the technology landscape, Harry believes one of the most valuable lessons from Sparta was learning how to use it effectively.

Rather than relying on AI to provide complete solutions, he uses it to help outline problems, identify useful resources and accelerate learning.

“It’s been especially useful where I understand the concept of what I’m trying to achieve, but not how to translate that into the specific language and syntax required.”

Building confidence in a new specialism

Moving into a new area of technology can be daunting, but Harry credits Sparta’s training environment with helping him adapt quickly.

The opportunity to learn through practical application gave him a solid foundation before joining client deployment and reinforced the importance of continuous learning.

“There doesn’t necessarily come a point where you know everything. That constant learning process is what makes it incredibly interesting and satisfying for myself.”

A typical day on deployment

Today, Harry works as part of a collaborative DevOps team supporting live services and delivering ongoing improvements across client projects.

Each day begins with a stand-up where incidents, priorities and sprint progress are discussed before the team moves on to development work, collaboration and problem-solving.

Working within an Agile environment, Harry enjoys the level of ownership his role provides and helps plan solutions alongside wider project objectives.

He is currently working on a project focused on centralising Ansible roles and consolidating separate projects into a more maintainable solution that can support future requirements.

Delivering impact through automation and security

Working in a highly security-conscious environment means security considerations are embedded throughout Harry’s work, from managing dependencies correctly to ensuring solutions remain secure and maintainable over the long term.

Alongside project work, Harry has already delivered tangible improvements for the wider client team.

“I was able to identify an issue with DockerHub rate limiting requests from the client, and was able to raise an incident that allowed the problem to be identified and fixed, improving the development process across the department.”

More recently, he has been helping drive automation improvements through pipeline development and CI/CD practices, ensuring testing standards are applied consistently throughout the development process.

A launchpad for a career in tech

Reflecting on his journey so far, Harry credits Sparta’s training and support network for helping him successfully transition into the industry.

“The support available in the training process is immense. The trainers are very dedicated to working with you personally to ensure that you have a deep baseline understanding of the topics, tools and concepts required to get started with a client.”

For anyone considering a career in technology, Harry believes curiosity and a willingness to keep learning are among the most valuable qualities you can have.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to figure out the complex problems that you come across, and if you enjoy the constant learning process I would say that a career in tech will suit you well.”
