EqualTech Report 2026: Why AI literacy, not access, defines the future of work
In Sparta Global’s 2026 EqualTech Report, we set out to answer a deceptively simple question: who is benefiting from AI, and who is being left behind? The central argument is this: the organisations and societies that will lead in the age of AI are not necessarily those with the most powerful systems. They are those that invest most seriously in the humans who use them.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is not a technology of the future – but a force reshaping every industry, every role, and every organisation today. Yet the defining challenge of this era is not whether businesses have access to AI, but whether their people know how to use it, improve its impact, and scale the positive delivery of its services.
We conducted an anonymous cross-sector survey of 1,100 professionals spanning general employees to C-suite executives – with more than 30% working in leadership positions. The respondent pool reflects a balanced gender split of 52.9% female and 47.1% male with the majority of participants aged between 35 and 64.
Drawing on this data, research reveals a striking contradiction:
- The Reality: Many employees are aware of AI, curious about its implementation, and already experimenting with it personally, keen to bring those habits into their professional roles as confidence grows.
- The Crisis: A staggering proportion of workers – across all seniority levels and industries – lack the skills, training, and fundamental understanding required to use AI effectively for business gains.
Only 4% of employees have been trained on how to use AI at work. Just 21% have any plans to access training, and more than three-quarters of the workforce cannot explain where AI even gets its data from – this hap gap is leaving organisations exposed to bias, error, and missed opportunity.
The good news is that fear is not the dominant sentiment – but remains a common stepping stone to fluency. Seventy percent of people we surveyed believe AI is a net positive for society. Most workers want to learn and are keen to adapt, but the challenge is structural: organisations are not investing in the training infrastructure required to unlock AI’s potential at scale.
