April Spartan of the Month: Arun Kalwan31/05/2019
“Arun is incredibly deserving of the Spartan of the Month accolade for April. He has recently passed the probationary period at his assigned company – a Sparta Global client based in Cardiff. Arun relocated to Wales for the role and has not only settled well in a new city, but in his new job too. He has been proactive about taking on more work in his role and sees the positives in every new experience. So much so, his current manager has expressed how much he would hate to lose him to another team!”
Chris White, Sales Director at Sparta Global
Awarded Spartan of the month for his dedication to his early-stage STEM career, we caught up with Arun Kilwan to learn more about his Sparta journey…
How did you end up joining Sparta Global?
I found out about Sparta through a friend of a friend. At the time I was looking to move into something suited to my Computer Science Degree and Sparta Global was positioned to help me do that.
I joined Sparta towards the end of August 2018 and graduated in November of the same year. I trained at their Birmingham Academy on the SDET stream - obtaining valuable knowledge, skills and an ISTQB qualification.
How did you know joining Sparta Global was the right path for you?
After seeing their glowing reviews and employee testimonials – and learning about the connections Sparta Global has with some of the largest companies in the world – joining was not a difficult choice to make.
After finishing university, I found it really difficult to obtain a job in my degree sector and ended up working shifts at Birmingham International Airport. It was certainly not what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, so I made the hard decision to leave a full-time paid job to take a leap of faith and pursue a career in something I really wanted to do.
Tell us about your training at Sparta Global
The training was excellent. The trainers are very approachable and knowledgeable, and I generally enjoyed being part of the Sparta Global family. Coming from a technical background, I feel I easily transitioned into the SDET stream, thoroughly enjoying all the tasks and challenges along the way.
How has your training prepared you for work?
Very well! My training put me in good stead to be able to work with others in a testing environment. Not only did it help me improve my technical skills, but it also enabled me to improve on my interpersonal and communication skills.
Tell us a little more about your client assignment
I am currently working in Cardiff as a QA Engineer and I am thoroughly enjoying it. I would ideally like to be working in a more technical role, but I am using it as a learning curve to be able to improve my skills onsite, work well with others and get experience in the life of a tester. I am also finding the time to do some self-development.
Are you enjoying working in the technology industry and if so – why?
Definitely! The technology industry is the future and it’s expanding at an astronomical rate, so it is so important to keep up to date. I enjoy the challenges of being able to solve a problem.
How did it feel to be named Spartan of the month?
I am delighted and honoured to be named Spartan of the month, I really appreciate the recognition! It is a real privilege to be chosen out of all other Spartans on-site and it really goes to show that hard work and commitment do pay off.
Would you recommend Sparta to other graduates and if so – why?
100%! I have learned so much in a short space of time and really do love what I do and working for Sparta Global. Sparta Global is able to provide so many opportunities for graduates that would be very hard to come by elsewhere.
