We caught up with Dominic to talk to him about his Spartan of the Month win…
Congratulations for being named Spartan of the Month!
Thank you, it feels great! It really makes me feel that the work I have done has been appreciated.
Let’s go back to the very start of your Spartan journey. Why did you decide to join Sparta Global?
I studied Electronic Engineering at Bangor University and was looking to get into a developer position before finding Sparta Global. When I came across the SDET position (which stands for Software Development Engineer in Test) at Sparta Global, I looked around the subject and found it interesting. One of my University friends had also already studied with Sparta Global, so I applied!
You ended up joining our C# SDET stream in October 2020 – during the pandemic. How did you find this?
Yes, so I technically trained at the Birmingham campus, but completed all of my training online and from home – starting in October 2020 and finishing in January 2021. I found the training was brilliant! I learned a range of skills in a short amount of time that have really helped me in my client assignment. The trainers were really helpful and knowledgeable too.
How exactly did your training prepare you for work?
I am currently a junior Java SDET Consultant on assignment with one of Sparta Global’s clients - a top five consultancy firm. I learned all the programming and testing skills I needed to work well on client site, but I also improved my soft skills, particularly communication and being able to work efficiently as part of a team.
Can you tell us a little bit about your day-to-day role as a Java SDET Consultant?
My work varies day to day, ranging from writing end-to-end test cases to writing component test cases, and occasionally writing scripts in JMeter for NFT.
In addition, I have been helping with presentations and presenting work to my current client, as well as teaching the client-side testers how our test framework is maintained.
So, 8 months in – how are you finding working in technology?
Overall, I have learned so much in the past few months and have really enjoyed it! I have always liked learning about different technologies and different programming languages and have also found working in tech really enjoyable so far.
Would you recommend Sparta Global to other graduates?
Absolutely - especially in the current state of affairs! Sparta Global provides the training necessary to be placed in the roles they are offering and it’s a great start.
