At the academy, we recently hosted guest speaker, Phil Nash – a developer evangelist from Twilio.
Twilio.com is a cloud communications platform that allows you to create cool integrations with text, video and voice messaging. After a demo of some of the things business can do with the service, Phil went on to talk about another interesting piece of tech he’s working with at the moment: service workers. Service workers allow web apps to extend their functionality in a way that had previously been limited to native apps.
For example, they could be used to prompt notifications on the status of a pizza you just ordered online. Phil’s prediction is that with the new opportunity offered by service workers, native apps and web apps are getting more and more similar and with the cost associated with maintaining native apps across multiple devices and operating systems, there’s less and less advantage to building native apps.
