July Spartan of the Month: Peter Limbu

“Peter Limbu is a tech enthusiast, and it was this passion for learning about new technologies and methodologies that helped him thrive as both a trainee and Spartan consultant. We have received excellent feedback from Peter’s line managers on site and his consistent performance has impressed everyone he works with. However, Peter has really impressed with his commitment to personal learning and development too. It is this desire to be a lifelong learner that will set him apart from others in the future.”

Chris White, Sales Director at Sparta Global

Congratulations for being named Spartan of the Month for July! Tell us a little bit more about how you came to join Sparta Global?

I came across Sparta Global on a job search site after completing my degree in games programming. I’ve always been a tech enthusiast, but I knew that I wanted to grow and improve my knowledge to succeed in the industry – while also having the opportunity to grow as a person within the right environment.

After my first interview with Sparta - where we had to work with other potential employees – I knew it was the right path for me.

Where did you train with Sparta Global?

I undertook my training at Sparta Global’s Richmond academy, joining the SDET stream in early June 2018. Within just three months I had graduated!

How did you find your training?

With so many diverse and interesting people in the classroom, the training was engaging and enjoyable. There were times when the challenging work could be stressful, but I thought this was normal with working in large groups and necessary to learn from. However, my trainer always put in maximum effort to ensure we understood the material.

I also loved how open the academy was and it put value on people being curious and asking questions which I really appreciated. Although, the best part of the training was making friends for life with my classmates and powering through the activities and challenges. Working towards a common goal is always nice!

How did your training prepare you for work?

The training with Sparta Global is a great base to work from, it teaches you core values and gives you the tools you need to get started in the tech industry. The rest is up to you depending on which way you want to go!

The staff also teach you how to behave in a professional manner. Each session from the training is set up to help you comply with Agile practices and self-reflection is encouraged too. By enforcing self-reflection and awareness and also giving trainees the base tools for technology jobs, I believe they ensure you are more than ready for work.

Tell us a little bit more about your first technology role

I am currently a Java software engineer for a global insurance brokerage and risk management services firm.

I am thoroughly enjoying my job and the responsibility that the company and my coworkers have already given me. I am currently engaged in a solo project - entrusted to me by the company - which involves making a web application and every day I am learning more and more about how to write clean code. No day is boring!

I am very lucky to be working with an extremely experienced senior who gives me not only coding advice but life advice too. Due to this job and the projects I have going on in the background, I have learnt so much about Java, web applications and functional programming. The Scala programming language may be the next one to learn!

Are you enjoying working in the tech industry and if so – why?

I am very passionate about my job and enjoy the shared passion for tech that everyone else has around me. Learning new things ever day and having a great mentor beside me is always a motivation to write better code and become a better person.

The job also allows me to talk to other tech enthusiasts and pursue tech projects and events outside of day-to-day work. One such instance is the website I have created outside of work by learning a new framework in my spare time - this even earned me a recommendation from the person who designed the course I studied.

Would you recommend Sparta to other graduates and if so – why?

I would recommend Sparta Global to other graduates - even if they haven’t graduated with a tech-related degree. Sparta will teach you to be professional, train you with the necessary skills and then allow you to demonstrate and practice the knowledge you have gained. They will also present you with opportunities to work at top tech companies.

From my perspective, the most important thing you should aim to get out of this is the friendships you make and experience you accumulate. If you are looking for opportunities, there are no better opportunities than in the tech field. Sparta is the right place to learn how the industry works while having a bit of fun along the way!
