Spartan of the month: meet Michael Mosson

After being awarded Spartan of the Month for his commitment to Sparta Global and his own career success, we spoke to Michael Mosson from his job in Surrey to discuss moving countries, training at the academy and what it means to work in tech…

How did you find out about Sparta Global?

I am originally from Scotland and I stayed in the country to study a Computer Games Development degree at University. However, after graduating and looking for a job in the technology industry, it became clear there were limited opportunities there.

I found Sparta Global on Indeed. I hadn’t come across the company before as they hadn’t expanded into Scotland, but it seemed like a great fit for me.

How did you know training with Sparta Global was the right path for you?

It has always been a goal of mine to work in the technology industry. I have always been interested in cutting-edge technology and keeping up with new developments – perhaps some of this even comes from my stepfather working as a data analyst back in Scotland.

But I knew I needed to leave to get the best head start in my own tech career. Sparta Global enabled me to move to England and find a role in the tech sector. I travelled to Leeds to learn more about Sparta and its recruitment process and really enjoyed the day. As soon as I was offered a place on the Test Analyst/Business Analyst course I jumped at the opportunity!

I loved moving to Leeds too, it’s a great place to be and a really great city.

How did you find the academy training?

I loved training at the academy. The trainers make every effort to make it a supportive environment where you aren’t afraid to fail because you can learn from failure. I also made some great friends during my time at the academy – I still keep in touch with other Spartans in the north and people in the office.

How did the academy training prepare you for work?

Sparta Global’s training is very good. It contains things like stakeholder management, something I think is really missing from university curriculums. However, where Sparta really differs is how it structures your learning like work – not further education. You don’t just rock up in the middle of the day for a lecture, Sparta starts the day at 9am with morning meetings or stand-ups that help you become comfortable with full time work and longer days.

Tell us a little more about starting your tech career after leaving the academy…

The thought of transitioning from the academy to work was scary! After leaving the Leeds academy, I was placed at Cubic Transportation Systems in Stockton-on-tees as a Test Engineer. I remember staying awake the night before I started and being very nervous about starting my first full-time job. But it was clear that the academy had prepared me for what I would be doing.

When my project with Cubic ended, the company asked me if I would consider relocating to Surrey to work at their head office. I had already moved from Scotland to Leeds to Stockton-on-tees – so I said yes! I really enjoy what I am doing each day and I am happy to work where I do.

What does it mean to be named Spartan of the month?

I was extremely proud to be named Spartan of the month because I didn’t expect to win!

Emma [Shilston, Consultant Engagement Advisor at Sparta Global] emailed me and asked to schedule a quick call. My first thought was; “Oh no. I’m in trouble!”. When Emma told me the reason for calling was because I had won Spartan of the month, I was relieved and completely over the moon. 

It has spurred me on to work harder and confirmed that I made the right decision when I chose to jump from Scotland to Leeds for my training. It gives me confidence to continue travelling and working in tech – and even achieve my dream of moving to California to build my own games company.

Would you recommend Sparta to other graduates?

Yes, I would recommend Sparta Global. With a growing number of graduates with computing degrees it is becoming more and more difficult to break into the tech industry. Sparta Global provides quality training to graduates that can bridge the gap between university and work, placing them with clients they would otherwise have a hard time getting a role with.
