I felt proud and really grateful. There are so many talented people at Sparta, so being recognised was a great confidence boost and very rewarding to see the effort I’ve put into developing my skills and supporting the team is being acknowledged.
Let’s go all the way back to the beginning, what and where did you study at university, if at all?
I studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of Leeds, completing an integrated Master’s degree. The course helped develop my analytical mindset and problem-solving skills, which have translated well into data engineering.
When did you officially join us at Sparta Global?
I joined Sparta Global in November 2023 on the Data pathway.
What made you decide Sparta Global was the right career move for you?
As I became more interested in data, automation, and cloud technologies, I wanted a role that combined structured learning with real industry experience. Sparta offered a clear pathway into tech, with strong training followed by client placement, which made it the ideal place to start my career in data engineering.
How did you find your training at the Academy, and how did it prepare you for the workplace?
The Academy was fast-paced and challenging, but extremely valuable. The hands-on training with tools like SQL, Python, Azure Synapse, and ETL pipelines gave me the confidence to contribute from an early stage.
Whilst you were with us at Sparta, did you make any connections, and can you tell us about them?
Yes, I built strong connections with fellow Spartans and trainers. Learning alongside people from different backgrounds was motivating, and that network has been a great source of support, knowledge-sharing, and encouragement.
So, where are you working now, and what is your current position?
I’m currently working as a Senior Data Engineer within the public sector.
Can you tell us what your day-to-day role looks like?
I work on developing and maintaining SQL-based reporting tables, supporting data migration, and ensuring data quality for downstream reporting. I collaborate closely with business analysts and stakeholders to translate requirements into technical solutions, maintain documentation and release processes. I've also led stand-ups and supported the team during key delivery phases.
And how have you found your first role in tech so far?
It’s been a steep but very positive learning curve. The work is meaningful, and I’ve been trusted with real responsibility early on, which has been incredibly rewarding.
Are you enjoying working in the tech industry, and what do you like most about it?
Yes, very much. I enjoy the constant opportunity to learn and improve, and finding data-driven solutions to complex problems keeps the work interesting.
Do you feel you now have the passion and skills to build a long-term career in technology?
Absolutely. The combination of Sparta’s training and my client experience has given me a strong foundation and a clear sense of direction for growing long-term as a data engineer.
Looking ahead, what are you most looking forward to next in your role?
I’m excited to take on more complex technical challenges, deepen my cloud expertise, contribute to large-scale projects, and now also step into leading my own team.
Lastly, would you recommend Sparta to others, and if so, why?
Yes, without hesitation. Sparta offers excellent training, strong support, and real opportunities to build a career in tech, all within a community that makes the journey both supportive and rewarding.
