After completing her nursing degree in 2022, Maria joined Sparta Global in 2024 to transition into a tech career through the DevOps pathway. Her time at the Academy gave her the practical, hands-on training she needed, strengthening her technical foundations and building her confidence as she moved into industry. Now working as an Infrastructure Engineer within the Public Sector, she supports key services through automation, technical updates, and collaborative improvements across teams. Recently named one of our Spartans of the Month, Maria is proud to see her hard work, growth, and commitment to developing a long-term career in technology recognised.
Congratulations on being named Spartan of the Month! How did it feel when you found out?
It was an amazing surprise and a huge honour. Seeing my hard work recognised, especially so early in my career, meant a lot to me and gave me even more motivation to keep improving.
Before we get into your role today, can you tell us what you studied at university?
I completed a nursing degree from 2019 to 2022. During that time, I built a strong foundation in communication, teamwork, and staying calm under pressure.
At what point did you decide Sparta Global was the right career move for you?
After shifting from hospitality and customer service into software development, I knew I needed structured, practical training and a clear pathway into real industry roles. Sparta offered exactly that; hands-on learning, strong support, and a route into tech.
When did you join Sparta, and which pathway did you follow?
I joined Sparta Global in 2024 as part of the DevOps Academy.
How did you find the training experience at the Academy?
Training was intense but incredibly rewarding. The interactive sessions, the energy from the trainers, and the opportunity to build real projects kept me engaged throughout. The strong DevOps foundation I gained played a big part in helping me secure my current role.
Can you tell us about any connections you made during your time at the Academy?
Definitely. I’ve built strong relationships with trainers, fellow Spartans, and colleagues across different teams. Those connections have been motivating and have helped me grow both technically and professionally.
Where has your career taken you now, and what’s your current position?
I’m currently working as an Infrastructure Engineer within the Public Sector.
What does your day-to-day work look like in that role?
My day-to-day includes knowledge-sharing sessions, raising and implementing technical updates, improving documentation, supporting dashboards, and contributing to smooth service transitions. I also work with stakeholders and apply DevOps practices such as automation, scripting, improving workflows, and enhancing service stability.
How have you found your first tech role overall?
It’s been an incredible learning experience. Challenging at times, but extremely rewarding. I’ve been able to take ownership, collaborate with multiple teams, solve real problems, and see my contributions make a visible impact.
Are you enjoying working in the tech industry, and what keeps you motivated?
Absolutely. Tech gives me the perfect mix of creativity and continuous learning. Every day brings something new to explore or improve, and I love that variety.
Do you feel you’re building the passion and skills for a long-term career in technology?
Yes, more than ever. The Academy training and my current role have shown me how much I enjoy building systems, solving issues, and learning new tools. I’m committed to growing my DevOps career long-term.
What are you most looking forward to achieving next?
I’m excited to keep developing, take on more responsibility, and contribute to high-impact national projects. I’m looking forward to continuously improving services and helping teams work more efficiently.
Lastly, would you recommend Sparta to others, and if so, why?
Definitely. Sparta provides the structure, support, and practical experience that many people need to break into tech, especially career changers like me. The training is industry-focused, the community is fantastic, and the opportunities that follow can be genuinely life-changing.
