November Spartan of the Month: Ruya Rose Kumru-Holroyd

After completing both a Bachelor’s in Computer Science and a Master’s in Software Engineering at the University of West London, Ruya joined Sparta Global in February 2023 to continue developing her programming skills and launch her career in Tech. Training at the Academy strengthened her foundations in C# while also expanding her expertise into Java, preparing her for success as a Java Developer on one of the largest projects at a top consultancy firm. Now recognised as a senior member of her team and supporting new joiners early in her career, Ruya has quickly made an impact. Recently named one of our Spartans of the Month, she’s proud to have her hard work, growth, and passion for Tech acknowledged.

Congratulations, Ruya, on being named one of our Spartans of the Month! A wonderful achievement, how did it feel when you found out?
I felt very grateful, and excited, to be named Spartan of the Month, it’s a great feeling to have your hard work rewarded and recognised!

When was it that you officially joined us here at Sparta Global?
I joined Sparta Global back in February 2023.

So, what made you decide that Sparta Global was the right career move for you?
At the time, I was looking for a role after graduating, and I enjoyed working with C# in my course and wanted to continue learning more about it when I came across the opportunity for Sparta on LinkedIn and thought it was perfect for me to get a start in the industry and also continue my progress of learning and developing my programming skills.

Speaking of graduating, what and where did you study?
I studied Computer Science for my undergraduate degree and Software Engineering for my master’s, both at the University of West London.

Sounds very exciting. So, from university to Sparta Global, how was the transition into Training with our academy? How did it prepare you for work?
I found the training at the Academy helpful and exciting; it helped me build on the foundations of programming that I had learnt at university as well as teach me new skills that I have taken with me whilst working for the client. Although I trained in C# originally, Sparta gave us the opportunity to also upskill in Java which allowed me to be put forward for the role I am currently in.

Do you feel as though you built many connections through Sparta?
Throughout my time with Sparta and the client, I have been able to meet lots of like-minded and hardworking individuals which has made working enjoyable and rewarding. Everyone has been helpful and kind, always willing to lend a hand and help me grow, not only as a developer but to be someone with more confidence and good communication skills.

Speaking of work, what is your current position and with what company?
I’m currently a Java developer for a top consultancy company, working with one of their largest projects.

Tell us a little bit more about your day-to-day role. What do you get stuck into?

In my day-to-day, I work based on tickets for deliveries to the project, sometimes these can be small bug tickets or big stories that can take time to complete. I’ve also been labelled as a senior in my team, which is a great honour considering how early I am in my career, because of this I also tend to help new joiners and other developers in my team.

And how have you found your first role in the Tech world?
It’s been a really great experience, I’m very happy in the role I’m in and the project I work on has big impacts which I find very exciting and rewarding. I’ve met some great people and peers whilst in this role as well which has made the experience all the better.

Do you feel you now have the passion and skill to carve a long-serving career in technology?
Definitely, I really feel my confidence and passion has grown every day since I joined Sparta and started working for this client, I would love to aim to be a Tech lead in the future.

Lastly, would you recommend Sparta Global to other graduates and if so - why?
Absolutely, it is a great way to either develop skills or learn new ones and get your foot in the door for the industry you want to go into. The connections I have made have also been so great, I couldn’t recommend it enough.
