After graduating during the COVID-19 pandemic, Ryan felt underprepared to step into the tech industry - despite holding a degree in Cyber Security Management. Wanting to build confidence and sharpen his skillset, he joined the Sparta Global Academy. Three years later, Ryan is thriving as a Business Analyst at an asset management company and has been named Spartan of the Month for his standout work on a major automation project.
Congratulations Ryan on being named Spartan of the Month! How did it feel to be recognised?
It was a really nice surprise! It’s nice to know that the work I’m doing is being recognised, and that I’m making a positive impact. It’s definitely given me an extra boost of motivation.
Tell us a bit about your background - had you always planned to work in tech?
Yes, tech was always something I was interested in - even back in secondary school. I studied Cyber Security Management at Bournemouth University, but my time there was heavily impacted by the pandemic. By the time I graduated, I wasn’t sure I had the experience or confidence to jump straight into a tech role. That’s when I came across Sparta Global - an opportunity to build practical experience and gain the confidence I needed to take my first step into the tech industry.
And what was your experience like at the Sparta Academy?
Honestly, I always say this - and I mean it - I learned more in three months at the Academy than I did in three years at university. I started on the Cyber Security pathway, but then had the opportunity to shift across to Business Analysis, which turned out to be a great fit for me. That flexibility really helped shape my career path.
What’s your current role, and what kind of work are you doing now?
I’m currently a Business Analyst at an asset management company. One of the best parts of the role is the variety - I’ve worked on projects involving AI, Wealth Management, and even had the chance to lead a small team.
How have you found your first role in tech overall?
It’s been fantastic. I couldn’t have asked for a better entry point into the industry. The role has been everything I hoped it would be - dynamic, challenging, and full of learning opportunities. There’s always something new to dive into.
What has surprised you about working in tech?
Probably just how much variety there is! You’re constantly evolving with the work, and every day is a little bit different. There’s also a real sense of collaboration, especially when you’re working across different teams to solve problems together.
Have you made strong connections through Sparta?
Absolutely. From day one at the Academy, through to being on client site, I’ve built strong connections with other Spartans. Having people around you at a similar stage in their career creates a real support network - it makes such a difference when you’re starting out.
Do you feel confident that this is a long-term career path for you?
Without a doubt. I’ve grown so much professionally and personally since joining Sparta. I’ve developed real confidence in my skills, and I’m excited to keep pushing myself. I can’t wait to see where I’ll be in another three years!
And finally - would you recommend Sparta Global to others looking to start a career in tech?
Definitely. I don’t think I’d be in the position I’m in now without Sparta. They helped me get my foot in the door, gave me the training I needed, and set me up for success. For anyone looking to break into tech, it’s a brilliant place to start.

"Ryan’s performance continues to impress. His recent presentation at our BA Surgery session was a great example of his communication skills and understanding of the work - he told a clear and compelling story of the team’s journey from manual processes to dynamic dashboards, making the value and impact easily understood. The session sparked real engagement from the audience. I also really appreciated Ryan’s willingness to volunteer - presenting to a large group isn't easy, and his contribution added real value not just to the session, but to the wider BA community."
