After completing a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering at Lancaster University, Lewis joined Sparta Global in June 2024 with a clear goal - to transition into a career in technology. Since then, he has built on his strong analytical background to develop hands-on software engineering skills, securing a role as a Software Developer within a major UK public sector organisation. Contributing to large-scale public sector systems, Lewis is already building valuable experience while continuing to grow his technical skillset. He has earned strong recognition from his team for the quality of his work, his clear leadership potential, and his consistent commitment to both his role and ongoing development.
To kick things off, can you tell us about your university background?
I studied Chemical Engineering (MEng) at Lancaster University. While it wasn’t directly related to software development, it gave me a strong foundation in analytical thinking and problem-solving, which has been really useful in my transition into tech.
When did you join Sparta Global?
I joined Sparta Global in June 2024.
What made you decide Sparta Global was the right career move for you?
Before joining Sparta, I was already upskilling in software development and looking to move into the tech industry. Sparta felt like the perfect opportunity to take that next step - not only to continue learning, but to gain real industry experience and get my foot in the door of a field I now really enjoy working in.
How did you find your training at the Institute, and how did it prepare you for the workplace?
I really enjoyed my time at the Institute. I learned a huge amount in a short space of time, and having experienced tutors teaching software development principles made a big difference compared to learning on my own. It gave me a solid foundation and the confidence to step into my role and start contributing straight away.
Can you tell us about the connections you’ve built through Sparta?
I’ve made some great connections with other Spartans, both within my cohort and across different roles. It’s been really valuable going into placements already knowing people, and I think those relationships will stay with me throughout my career.
Where are you working now?
I’m currently working as a Software Developer within a major UK public sector organisation.
What does your day-to-day role involve?
My role focuses on designing, developing, and maintaining services used by Law Enforcement Agencies. Day to day, that includes building features in Java, resolving production issues as part of third-line support, and improving the system by addressing technical debt.
At the moment, I’m also working on migrating parts of a monolithic application to AWS Lambda, helping to make the system more scalable and easier to maintain.
How have you found your first role in tech so far?
It’s been a great experience. The transition from the Sparta Institute into my placement felt really seamless, and I was well prepared for what the role involved.
Are you enjoying working in the tech industry?
Definitely. I’ve always enjoyed problem-solving, and this role gives me plenty of opportunities to do that. There’s always something new to learn or figure out, and it’s really satisfying when you solve a problem or deliver something valuable at the end of a sprint.
Do you feel you have the skills and drive to build a long-term career in technology?
Yes, I do. I’ve learned a lot in a relatively short period of time, and I’m keen to keep building on that. I’ve currently got my AWS Certified Developer - Associate exam booked, which I’m working towards alongside my role.
What are you looking forward to next in your career?
I’m looking forward to converting to a Civil Servant and continuing to develop both my technical and non-technical skills. Longer term, I’d like to work towards becoming a senior developer over the next few years.
Finally, would you recommend Sparta to other graduates and if so - why?
Absolutely. Sparta gives you a genuine opportunity to break into the tech industry, especially if you’re trying to take that first step. They provide the skills, support, and platform to get started, which makes a big difference early on in your career.
